Children entering Phase Three will have grasped around 19 letters. They will be able to blend and segment phonemes to read and spell VC words. Children should be able to blend and segment CVC words orally. Phase Three will teach an additional 25 graphemes in order for children to be able to represent a total of 44 phonemes by a grapheme. Children will also learn letter names, read and spell some tricky words and continue to practise CVC blending and segmenting to use their expanded knowledge on reading and spelling two- syllable words and captions.

The resources in this section are all suitable for supporting the teaching of Phase 4 of Letters and Sounds. By Phase 4, children will be able to represent each of the 44 phonemes by a grapheme. They will be able to blend the phonemes to read CVC words and segment CVC words for spelling. They will know letter names, read simple two-syllable words and be able to read and spell some tricky words. Phase 4 will introduce words containing adjacent consonants and polysyllabic words.
