Supporting pupils’ health and wellbeing from the earliest opportunity is vital. Making wellbeing a priority in your classroom will enable all children to thrive with good mental health and be more successful in their learning. Here are a few areas to consider...
Get to know your class
Really knowing the children in your class can make all the difference. Spend time getting to know each child individually and learning about their special interests.
When we know the things they enjoy or need, we can add these into their day to support them. When we know what they don’t like, we can anticipate difficulties and be ready to remove any triggers or offer support.
Learn
Learning to recognise and regulate emotions are skills that children need to be taught, just like reading and writing. All emotions are ok, and it is how we respond that is important. When children have these skills, they can name their emotions and feel in control of them. Over time, they will build a bank of strategies that work best for them. For example, when children know what makes them happy, they can use those things when they are feeling sad.
There are so many activities to try when teaching emotions. You could:
• name the emotion • draw the emotion • talk about what makes them feel this emotion • share what happens to their body • discuss strategies for when they feel this way
Keep Moving There is a lot of research that links physical activity with mental health and wellbeing. Giving children opportunities to be active within lessons and throughout the day can increase engagement, improve attention span and also support their wellbeing.
